BioMy mother gave the coyote $1,000 to take me to Los Angeles.
The City of Angels, she said, would save me. Get me away from the dirt and pain.
He was nice, he said. He said if I was nice
he would deliver me to my uncle Raul,
who waited for me in LA. I didn't cry, no.
I'd learned early on how to be nice, to lie still and hold my tears.
Forgive me, I said to the stars and the moon as I stared at the night sky.
The same sky that watched me as I slipped into the river and felt my lungs burn.
In the dark I felt fingers upon my body, comforting like my mother's.
Mama, I said. But all I heard was the rush of the tides.
